The Ostrich Industry in the 2020’s
In last month’s blog, we explored the fascinating history of the Ostrich Industry in Oudtshoorn, and we learned that the industry suffered a collapse in 1914 due to the outbreak of the First World War, an event still known as “the fall of the feather era”. This month, we’ll look at the industry’s current state, where Ostrich products are again thriving economically.
Cape Karoo International (CKI) is the world’s leading producer of ostrich leather, feathers, and meat, resulting from the merger between Klein Karoo International and Mosstrich. With a history dating back to the 1860s, the company sustains thousands of jobs through various farms, tanneries, abattoirs, and a feather processing facility. CKI is known for impeccable service and top-quality products and has the confidence of over 200 ostrich farming shareholders.
Feathers
Although Ostrich feathers are not as popular a fashion accessory as they were in the late eighteen hundreds, they have regained popularity again as costume decorations and account for almost 40% of the total industry revenue! Within show business and the entertainment world ostrich feathers have risen to the top once again and currently the annual Rio Carnival remains one of the largest consumers of Ostrich feathers from Oudtshoorn. Just the other day, at the opening of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the infamous Lady Gaga entered the stage with an entourage of backup performers, all swathed in beautiful feathers from birds in the Klein Karoo! We were overjoyed with pride.
Leather
Ostrich leather is highly prized for its unique quill pattern, creating a textured “goose bump” effect. Roughly 55% of the skin is adorned with quills, while the smooth areas are found below the wings. Accounting for around 40% of the overall income of the industry, ostrich leather from our region has international designers such as Hermes and Louis Vuitton queueing to lay their hands on the finest premium skins. These high-quality skins are essential for products requiring large, flawless panels and due to their scarcity and high demand, premium ostrich skins command a premium price.
Meat
Indulge in the exquisite taste of ostrich meat – a healthy and sustainable alternative to red meat. With high protein, low calories, and minimal saturated fats, ostrich meat is the perfect choice for balanced and nutritious meals. Its versatility caters to the needs of both home cooks and professional chefs, fitting tastefully into light meals, nutritional lunches, and hearty dinners. Crafted through environmentally friendly farming practices and a commitment to animal welfare, ostrich rearing ensures exceptional taste and quality. Every meat product can be fully traced back to the farm, guaranteeing its origin and quality. Endorsed by the South African Heart Foundation, our region’s ostrich meat products can be found in leading supermarkets across South Africa and internationally in France, Switzerland, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
